USDA Grant Funds Ph.D. Training

Claudio Stöckle ‘Community Models’ Panel Expert

Roopesh Syamaladevi

Roopesh Syamaladevi was selected to participate in the “December Career Day” (sponsored by PepsiCo and the New York Academy of Sciences) in New York City at the Academy’s headquarters on December 12, 2011. Fifty exceptional students and early career scientists have been selected for this unique opportunity to interact with PepsiCo’s R&D leadership, learn about their efforts to develop products rooted in science-based nutrition, and get an exclusive glimpse of how science has shaped their careers. He was selected to this award based on his resume and a research proposal “Protection of biotic lipophilic food ingredients during storage: A study on micro and macroscopic molecular mobility in glassy food encapsulants” prepared with the help of his PhD research advisor Dr. Shyam Sablani.

Roopesh also received Graduate Student Travel grant from WSU Graduate and Professional Student Association to attend 11th Conference of Food Engineering to be held in Leesburg, VA from April 2-4, 2012

Shyam Sablani Receives  the 2011 Vapor Sorption Analyzer Grant

The Department of Biological System Engineering at Washington State University and the bi state School of Food Science have been awarded the 2011 Vapor Sorption Analyzer (VSA) Grant. This WSU/UI research team was chosen to receive the 2011 VSA Grant because it is well known for its materials science research and its extensive list of published works. Dr. Shyam Sablani is the lead scientist on this cooperative project. [more]

Markus Flury Elected Fellow

Dr. Markus Flury, affiliate Faculty member of BSysE, was elected Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America during the Annual Meeting of the Soil Science Society of America in San Antonio this week. The Fellow is the highest recognition given by the society. It is based on professional achievements and meritorious service. Up to 0.3% of the society’s active and emeritus members may be elected Fellow.

Roopesh Syamaladevi Receives WSU scholarship and is Honored at IFT 2011

BSysE Graduate student Roopesh Mohandas Syamaladevi won second place in the refrigerated and frozen foods division of the Institute of Food Technologists’ (IFT) 2011 Graduate Student Paper Award Competition. IFT is a leading international scientific society in food science, technology and engineering.   [ref: WSUToday]  Roopesh returned from IFT to be honored again by receiving the WSU Graduate School doctoral Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to individuals who have shown outstanding research and scholarship among Ph.D. graduate students at WSU. Roopesh works under the supervision of assistant professor and scientist Shyam Sablani.

Shoujie Ren Wins National Science Travel Award
June 20, 2011

BSysE Graduate student Shoujie Ren, under the supervision of assistant professor and scientist Hanwu Lei, won a travel award of $447 from University of Florida (UF) travel office through the National Science Foundation to attend the ASME 2011 International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC) to be held at the Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR in June 2011. Shoujie made an oral presentation titled “Microwave torrefaction of corn stover and tech-economic analysis” at the conference.
