J-1 Visa English Language Proficiency Requirements

There are three options for English Proficiency:

Option 1. English Language Exam – Score reports for one of the following accepted English language exams, taken within the last two years, that meet the minimum scores may be uploaded:

  • MELAB- 76
  • TOEFL iBT – 65
  • TOEFL ITP- 550
  • IELTS – 6.0
  • PTEA- 50
  • Duolingo – 95
  • MET-49
  • IELA-169
  • ITEP-3.7

Upon review of the J-1 request ISSS will verify the results of the exam meet the minimum requirements. If they do not, the department will be given the option of a secondary review in the form of an interview conducted by an English as a second language professional (with associated charge).

Option 2. Degree – a post-secondary degree from an English-speaking University:

Option 3. Interview conducted by ESL professional – scheduled by ISSS, you will need to request this option from the hosting department:

ISSS provides the option of an interview conducted by an English as a Second Language professional at a charge to the department of $102. ISSS faculty will schedule the interview and provide the assessment for English language ability. If deemed proficient, the English Proficiency Attestation will be approved by the Scholar Team. If not deemed proficient, the Scholar Team is unable to issue a DS-2019.

The interview will not be conducted until the S 102 fee is authorized by the hosting department.

Due to the large amount of requests at the beginning of the semester, there may be a delay in
scheduling the interview.
